Betawi

blantekAnother type of tari rakyat is known as betawi, from the area around Jakarta, the former Dutch capital of Batavia. These dances and their accompanying music were strongly influenced by the many foreigners that traded and settled in that area: Indian, Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and especially Chinese.

Musically, betawi is derived from abbreviated gamelan orchestras used in street entertainment. The orchestration includes a traditional drum, gongs, metallaphones, krecek (or cymbal), trumpet, and rebab (a stringed instrument).
